A Landmark of Faith in Upper Wensleydale

Rising above the bustling market town of Hawes, the tower of St Margaret’s Church stands as one of Upper Wensleydale’s most recognisable silhouettes. Though the present building dates to the mid‑19th century, the story of worship in Hawes stretches back centuries and reflects the evolving life of this remote Yorkshire dale.

Though built on a grand scale for its time, St Margaret’s has remained a vibrant centre of worship and community life and today, the church continues to serve residents and visitors alike, offering a place of reflection amid the dramatic scenery of Upper Wensleydale.

St Margaret’s Church is more than a Victorian landmark—it is the culmination of centuries of spiritual life in Hawes. From its humble origins as a remote chapel of ease to its present form as a proud parish church, it embodies the resilience, identity, and faith of the people of Wensleydale. It's tower still watches over the Dale, a reminder of the generations who built, sustained, and cherished this remarkable place.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

Psalm 121:1–2 (NIV)
